Chocolate Chai Latte

Confession time: I used to LOVE a chai latte from Costa or Nero. Then I discovered how much sugar was in them (more than in a hot chocolate!) and overnight I stopped drinking them.Since then I’ve been trying to recreate something which tastes just as good but without the nasties. Finally, after much trial and error, I think I’ve succeeded. In fact, it’s somewhere between a hot chocolate and a chai latte. Personally, I find the cinnamon provides enough sweetness, but if you've got a particularly sweet tooth then add some honey or maple syrup. It’s the perfect drink to enjoy when you’re curled up on the sofa under a blanket.

Chocolate Chai Latte

Refined sugar-free | Gluten-free | Dairy-free | Vegan

Skill: Easy

Time: 5 minutes

Makes: 1 cup

Ingredients

  • 1 teaspoon cacao powder

  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon

  • Half a teaspoon mixed spice

  • Half a teaspoon ground ginger

  • 1 cup (250ml) almond milk (or other milk of your choice)

Method

  1. I mix all the ingredients in a blender first because I find that helps blend the powdered spices in, then heat it in a small pan. But if you don’t have a blender or just don’t want to get it out and make more washing up (!) simply add everything to a pan and whisk in the spices as you heat. Pour into a mug and serve.
